The Basic Information

NAFEA 2012 will be held July 17-19 at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.

Early bird registration prices:

Students: $80
Regular Members: $120
Nonmembers: $150

Guest passes for the mixer may be purchased for $15. After May 20, prices will go up by $20.  Onsite registration will be $40 higher than early registration, and on-site guest passes will be $20.

We now have the ability to register for multiple events at once – many of you complained last year that it was confusing and irritating to have to repeat the same information.

The workshop this year will be “Experimental Design and Statistics: Current Trends and Techniques for Forensic Entomologists”, taught by multiple scientists from within the field of forensic entomology.  Using real-world examples,  workshop participants will learn proper design, data and statistical procedures that are currently being used.  The intent of this workshop is to provide a forum where all individuals, from new students to experienced entomologists, will be able to learn and discuss proper techniques that will improve the overall science produced in our field.  This workshop is a real bargain at only $35.

Abstract submission is currently live. Please submit your abstracts no later than May 20th.  Much like the registration process, abstract submission should be easier than last year.

Special Panel Discussion: Seeking the Truth: The Casey Anthony Trial

Thursday, July 19, 2012
9:00am-10:00am

This panel discussion will involve NAFEA student members asking questions to forensic expert witnesses involved with entomological evidence from the Casey Anthony case that took place in Florida, USA, during 2011.

Caylee Marie Anthony (August 9, 2005 – ca. June 2008) was an American two-year-old girl who was reported missing in Orlando, Florida, in July 2008, and whose remains were found in a wooded area near her home in December 2008. Entomological evidence was extensively involved in the case.

Her then 22-year-old mother, Casey Marie Anthony, was tried for the first-degree murder of Caylee, but was acquitted. She was, however, in 2011 convicted of misdemeanor counts of providing false information to police officers.

This question and answer discussion will be based on manuscript depositions from the prosecution and defense that will be provided electronically to NAFEA members ahead of time so they can formulate their own questions. Dr. Neal Haskell was the expert forensic entomology witness for the prosecution in this case and will be representing this side and the defense expert witness will be determined
