Dear NAFEA:

The Annual Meeting Committee for 2013 in Dayton would like to clarify the process of abstract evaluation for the 2013 meeting.

1) In order to keep the meeting to less than three days there are a limited number of spots (about 30) for oral presentations. To accommodate the most number of oral presentations while also facilitating poster presentations we will be reviewing abstracts this year to rank them for oral or poster. The review process is also intended to provide feedback to students on their abstract writing in a way to increase academic and professional development.

2) The review process is being developed but will primarily be focused on data quality and presentation to rank oral presentations. The review process will be done by a review committee of professors and other forensic professionals. This will only happen for oral presentations for this year.

3) Thus, all abstracts will be accepted, but we will be ranking about 30 for oral presentations. Any remaining will be invited to give a poster presentation at the meeting.

Please contact me with any questions (eric.benbow@gmail.com).

Best,
Eric

Thursday, July 19, 2012
9:00am-10:00am

This panel discussion will involve NAFEA student members asking questions to forensic expert witnesses involved with entomological evidence from the Casey Anthony case that took place in Florida, USA, during 2011.

Caylee Marie Anthony (August 9, 2005 – ca. June 2008) was an American two-year-old girl who was reported missing in Orlando, Florida, in July 2008, and whose remains were found in a wooded area near her home in December 2008. Entomological evidence was extensively involved in the case.

Her then 22-year-old mother, Casey Marie Anthony, was tried for the first-degree murder of Caylee, but was acquitted. She was, however, in 2011 convicted of misdemeanor counts of providing false information to police officers.

This question and answer discussion will be based on manuscript depositions from the prosecution and defense that will be provided electronically to NAFEA members ahead of time so they can formulate their own questions. Dr. Neal Haskell was the expert forensic entomology witness for the prosecution in this case and will be representing this side and the defense expert witness will be determined
